Featured Project: Zimbabwe

Once one of sub-Saharan Africa’s most promising nations, Zimbabwe has become a tragic example of a failed state under the dictatorial leadership of President Charles Mugabe and his political party, ZANU-PF.

Zimbabwe is home to the Chiadzwa diamond fields in Marange, potentially one of the most significant diamond discoveries in several decades. In an effort to maintain control of the revenue from Zimbabwe’s diamond trade, Mugabe’s regime has been responsible for widespread human rights abuses and the financial mismanagement of the funds earned from the country’s diamonds.

For the past decade, Brian Leber has worked extensively with the US Congress, government agencies, and members of the NGO community to find a solution that will help the people of Zimbabwe in their time of need. In addition, Leber Jeweler Inc has used its voice and influence in the jewelry industry to draw attention to this very critical chapter in the conflict diamond saga.

At present Zimbabwe remains an approved member of the Kimberley Process—an international certification process to end the trade of conflict diamonds—despite efforts from the US, Canada, the UK and other nations to have them expelled. Leber Jeweler Inc remains engaged on this issue and believes it is possible to end the import of these blood diamonds into the US.
