Part of the allure of a natural diamond is this; they are rare because they were formed by nature, and are therefore finite. That’s why people wanted them in the first place. Say what you will about the natural diamond industry, and at Leber Jeweler, we have given more than our fair share of criticism of this often-troubled sector. The fact is, it isn’t easy work procuring natural diamonds from the earth.

Natural diamonds are, in the grand scheme of things, rare. Especially the fine, gem quality ones. And this is what makes them expensive.

As for lab-grown diamonds, yes, they do look like natural diamonds. That’s a plus. The technology behind them was, ironically, largely developed for industrial, and not jewelry uses. The ultimate goal for lab-created diamonds is to make the process so inexpensive that man-made diamond can replace silicon in computer chips, thereby allowing much higher processor speeds due to increased thermal capacity. Makes sense. After all, the real money is in the tech industry. (Well, that and the health care sector, but I digress.) So your lab-grown diamond purchase is helping to make the $1 synthetic diamond computer chip a reality. The collateral damage to this will be that the lab-created diamond you buy today for several thousand dollars will be worth pennies by the time you’re ready to hand your engagement ring down to your grandchildren. Of course, there will still be the sentimental value.

Should you buy a lab-grown diamond instead of a natural diamond? That depends.

They really aren’t “eco-friendly.” That’s greenwashing. If you like the science and technology part, there is a certain novelty to it. If you loath the large-scale mining industry or detest the giant diamond cartels, yet still really want a diamond and not some other gemstone and don’t have a grandmother passing down her heirloom diamond from her engagement ring, then maybe they are right for you. Our point is, there are pros and cons to both natural and man-made diamonds, and we aren’t going to lie to you and say one or the other is the only “green” choice. We just offer honest information, and let you decide what’s best for you.

If you’re OK with everything we’ve told you then yes, we do sell lab-grown diamonds and our prices will be lower than you will find most anywhere else.

Why? Because the real reason many places now sell lab-grown diamonds is this. Lab-grown diamonds are far more profitable than natural diamonds. We aren’t convinced they are as… ”ideal” as many claim. As such, we don’t mark them up as much as other diamond sellers.

In addition, every diamond we sell comes with something else. The truth. It can be complicated, we know, but we’re here to help you make a mindful and informed decision regarding your ethical jewelry purchase.
